Climbing

Mississippi Palisades State Park offers climbers the opportunity to scale the limestone bluffs along the river. Climb heights reach up to 100 feet. With over 150 routes, ranging from class 5.2 to 5.12, there is something for every skill level. Giant City State Park offers skilled climbers two locations: Devil's Standtable cliff and Shelter #1 bluff at the Makanda entrance. Want to try something smaller to start? Test your abilities at a climbing wall. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reminds us that climbing is a dangerous sport and that before heading out to a climb, participants need to have appropriate climbing gear and need to contact the park office for their site-specific requirements, established for the safety of the outdoor enthusiast and the protection of the natural resources.
